We put endless thought and concern into what goes into our own diets. But for our pets, it is just as important to make sure their nutritional needs are being met so they can live a long, happy life.

How Many Calories Does My Pet Need?

Your pet doesn’t just need the best pet meals, they need the right amount of food. Figuring out your pet’s calorie needs is an important way to ensure they are getting the right nutrition.

Underfeeding or overfeeding your pet can result in lethargy, weight gain or loss, and affect their long-term health. There are a number of factors that can affect your pet’s caloric needs including breed, weight, size, age, and lifestyle.

The Tom&Sawyer Calorie Needs Calculator helps you to determine how many calories per day your cat or dog requires.

Add one tsp of Puppy Booster nutritional formula for every 1lb of puppy food to ensure optimal puppy growth.

Breed & Weight

Your dog’s breed and weight information help to determine the required amount of nutrients. The breed gives an idea of the size of the dog. A larger breed, such as a Bernese Mountain Dog will need more food than a smaller breed, like a Pomeranian.

The calculator determines caloric requirements based on the weight of your dog, to ensure they are not being over or underfed.

Lifestage & Lifestyle

The age and lifestyle of your dog has an immediate impact on the best dog food calorie recommendations. A young dog generally has a higher caloric need than an adult – they are more active at this stage and may still be growing and developing.

An older dog will typically require fewer calories. High-quality ingredient dog food provide optimal nutrition, and can help with senior dogs who have developed sensitive stomachs or allergies.

A dog with an active lifestyle requires more food every day. A working dog for example, has a much higher caloric need than an adult pet dog.

Breed & Weight

Let us know the breed and weight of your cat. Your cat’s breed and size has a direct impact on their required calorie intake.

Size

There are three cat sizes to be taken into consideration; lean, average, and overweight. A lean cat has minimal fat covering and may be identified by visible ribs, spine and pelvic bone. An average cat has even muscle mass throughout the body and the ribs, spine and pelvic bone are not visible but can be felt easily under the surface. An overweight cat’s ribs, spine and pelvic bone are not easily felt, their waist is diminished, and they may have visible fat deposits on their body.

If it is your intention to change your cat’s current weight to achieve their ideal weight, a lean cat will require more cat food, while an overweight cat will need less. If you are unsure as to the category your cat fits into, check with your veterinarian.

How To Use The Pet Calorie Information

Tom&Sawyer can use these numbers to help estimate how much pet food you should order. They will also combine this information with the number of times per day your pet is fed to determine what you should feed your pet and how much to feed them per meal.
